Gold Buttes, Nevada - Grub Hub Mini Adventure

The Gold Buttes region, a new candidate for wilderness designation located just east of Lake Mead, Nevada was the target of our back country travels. Over a three day weekend we were looking forward to hiking and exploring the Colorado River where the free flowing waters of the Grand Canyon meet Lake Mead.

Dragging our new tent trailer behind the Jeep started off easy, but went slower than expected on the heavily wash-boarded dirt road. As afternoon turned into evening, we crawled over the top of a pass looking down into the Colorado River more than 4000 feet below and my wife reminded me once again it would soon be dark. The “ruggedized” trailer was already missing some paint from the overgrown brush along the rarely used and washed out road. I secretly kept my fingers crossed we wouldn’t blow a tire on the jagged granite rocks strewn along the road. Both of us repeatedly peered at the hillside below dropping sharply into the canyon on the right side of the vehicle but refrained from amplifying the tension by commenting. For the last five slow miles we had considered going back but as the road became entrenched in a narrow gully and then exposed on the steep hillside there was no turning around.

The desert mountain air cooled as the early March day faded quickly into darkness. Turning on the headlights made it official we were on a real adventure. My wife was a trooper and joked that when we got to camp she would set up the Grub Hub®, feed the dogs, and make dinner while I did the real work unfurling the tent trailer. I added that it was a calm, warm evening and the stars would be spectacular in the desert that night.

Jolted by yet another chunk of granite I refused to voice the uncertainty of us making it another 100 yards, much less traversing the 2-3 miles of rocks, deep sand, and possibly washed-out gully that I guessed were still ahead….
